R.I.P. Jamie Giltrap
Hardcore jungle pioneer Tango, real name Jamie Giltrap, has died.
Giltrap emerged from the Midlands in the early '90s with a string of essential hardcore jungle productions on labels like Formation Records and Moving Shadow. Born in Bromley, before moving to south-east London and onto Kent in the mid-'80s, he was initially producing and DJing hip-hop before being helping shape the evolution of hardcore into jungle, j-tek and drum & bass from the beginning of the '90s.
His first release was on DJ SS and Eidris Hassam's Formation Records in 1991. His second EP for Formation, Future Followers, was a breakout 12-inch and remains a key 1993 release to this day. Last year, Giltrap launched a label called Steel Fingers Heritage with assistance from MPS Vinyl, which issued sought-after and unreleased productions from the early '90s.
